{Thrifty Thursday} A New Years Eve Mantel

New Years Eve Mantel

Hi friends! Are you like me and have all your Christmas put up and am breaking out your New Years decor? JUST kidding! I’m no where close to that, Christmas may be up for weeks at this point, but since I did do a New Years Mantel last year and didn’t share it with you here at A Night Owl, I thought I would this year! And this mantel is thrifty, let me tell you…with just a few dollars and some re-purposing, here’s what I came up with!

New Years Eve Mantel at @anightowlblog

The New Years Subway art I downloaded for free from amazing gals over at eighteen25. The sparkly wreath I made from a dollar store wooden reed wreath, $3 worth of sparkly silver chenille stems, and three different sizes of Christmas bulbs.

New Years Eve Mantel at @anightowlblog

The champagne glasses we owned, which I simply filled with silver Christmas bulbs. I took a mini-bottle of Martinelli’s sparkling cider (have you seen those in the stores? they are SUPER cute) and covered the label with something a little more personalized. I’ve also seen the “Time to Drink Champagne and Dance on the Table” printables out there and ended up mocking up my own to print in a dollar store 5×7 frame. Lastly, the mirror ball ornaments I found at Michael’s in their after-Christmas clearance.

New Years Eve Mantel at @anightowlblog

The chalkboard countdown to 2012 I made from a dollar store 11×14 frame in basically the same manner as the Etch-a-Sketch post/tutorial and the clock, which I received from a friend as a gift years ago, is from IKEA.

New Years Eve Mantel at @anightowlblog

So that’s it! What do you think? I think it’s not too shabby for those few days that we can do a countdown in between Christmas and New Years, hehe! Now let’s just see if I’m up to the challenge this year…

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers #HuggiesWalmart

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers #HuggiesWalmart

Hi friends! I’m so excited to talk to you about our favorite diapers today – Huggies Snug and Dry Diapers! When I was a new mom with our first boy a few years ago, I know that I tried every diaper under the sun; you only want the best for your children! And after trying different brands we found that Huggies Snug and Dry are hands down our diaper of choice.

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers #HuggiesWalmart

Huggies Snug and Dry keep your little ones dry, which you know is important for their sensitive baby skin. This protects against rashes and keeps your little ones comfortable! Huggies Snug and Dry also fit extremely well, with the new and improved Leak Lock protection and stopping guards around the legs that keeps wetness inside. This is so important for those early months when fun accidents can happen. You know what I’m talking about, right? Trust me, these diapers do the job!

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers #HuggiesWalmart

Also the stretchy SnugFit Waistband is not only comfortable for the little ones, it fits each and every one perfectly, which offers even more protection. And even as our boys have grown, we’ve continued to buy Huggies Snug and Dry. They’re simply the best. And I haven’t even mentioned the cute Disney characters! Alex always loves to see Mickey when we change his diaper. Just look at this happy guy!

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers #HuggiesWalmart

And right now, Huggies and Walmart are offering an amazing deal at a Walmart Rollback price, the Huggies Snug and Dry Super Pack! You can buy even more of these amazing diapers at an amazing price! I visited our local Walmart to pick up some of our own – you can view my trip to the store in this Google+ Album!

Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers #HuggiesWalmart

So be sure to go snag this amazing deal at your local Walmart or grab a few for those expecting friends! These diaper packs would make an amazing gift!

{Thrifty Thursday} No-Sew Thrifted Tablecloth Tree Skirt

Thrifted Tablecloth Tree Skirt at @anightowlblog

Hi friends! This just may be my last Christmas project to share with you – our Thrifted Tablecloth Tree Skirt! For our tree skirt this year, I didn’t want to spend a lot of time or money, and since we’re sticking with neutrals for our Christmas color theme, I wanted the tree skirt to coordinate. I got the idea when trying to come up with a way to find material that I didn’t have to transform into a circle. Naturally, a round tablecloth came to mind! I did shop my favorite stores for some inexpensive round tablecloths with fun patterns (oh there are so many fun options), when I realized I wanted something much simpler, and something I could find much more inexpensively at my local Goodwill.

So I headed to Goodwill on the search for a simple, neutral, round tablecloth. And I found one – for just $2.99! What a deal. I took it home, gave it a wash, then went to work.

What you’ll need:

  • Round tablecloth
  • Scissors
  • Fabric pen
  • Fabric tape

And the steps:

  • I folded the tablecloth into fourths to find the center point and market it with a fabric pen.
  • I then traced a circle around the center point and a line from the center point to the end of the tablecloth.
  • I then cut along the line all the way to the end of the center circle.
  • I used fabric tape to seal the seam on both sides of the cut.
  • I then cut the center circle into eighths (like a pie) and used triangle cut pieces of fabric tape to tack in the inside.
  • Then I wrapped the tree skirt around the base of the tree – and voila! Cheap and easy!

And here’s how it turned out…

Super simple, but honestly just what I was looking for. I love the simple ruffle on the outside, and the fact that I didn’t have to do anything to get it there! Now just to wrap some presents to put under that tree…are you all finished up for the holidays? I know I have more shopping to do! Wish me luck!

{Project Home} Joy to the World DIY Wall Hanging

Joy to the World DIY Wall Hanging @anightowlblog

Hi friends! So if you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen these letters on my messy craft table a couple of weeks ago. Well now you finally get to see what I’ve done with them – I made them into a Joy to the World DIY Wall Hanging! This DIY is so very easy, here are the steps…

What you’ll need:

  • Large “JOY” letters
  • Vintage map scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge
  • Hot glue gun/glue
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Twine

And the steps:

  • I traced the “JOY” letters onto the map scrapbook paper and cut the letters out.
  • I used Mod Podge to apply the scrapbook paper to the front of the letters.
  • Once dry, I glued the letters to a length of burlap ribbon, and glued a burlap bow to the top.
  • Lastly, I glued a loop of twine to the top of the burlap ribbon, behind the bow, to hang by, and you’re done!

What do you think? I love how it turned out. We have it hanging by our front entrance, just before the stairs. It’s a fun area to decorate with wall hangings such as this, though this is the first time I’ve made one! And, we’re almost done! Can you believe it – Christmas in less than a week?

Interactive Learning with Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Hi friends! Do you have little ones at home like I do? If so, I have a FUN interactive learning product to share with you today: the Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards by Cypher Entertainment! Cypher Kids introduces kids to the world of augmented reality – through 3D Learning Cards! There are three different interactive cards products currently on the market: Letters, Numbers and Animals! Since both of my kids, at ages 2 and 3, are learning their alphabet we thought that the Letters program was perfect for us! First, we ordered our Letters cards from Cypher through the Apple Store.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Once we received the cards in the mail, we promptly downloaded the Cypher Kids Club – Letters app for FREE from the iTunes app store. We chose to download and install the app onto our iPad, since that is what our kids use the most, but the Cypher Kids Club apps are available for download on the iPhone as well!

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Then once we launched the app, we were ready for some learning fun! From the main menu you choose the card that you want to interact with.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

The boys have found so many of the letters to be fun, but what boy wouldn’t choose “D” for Dinosaur first? Once you’ve picked the corresponding paper card and found it on the app, you’ll flip the card over so that the 3D marker is showing.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Then you hold your iPad over the card so that the camera can read the 3D marker and voila! The interaction begins. Digi and Beebot, the two robotic hosts of Cypher Kids take you through the pronunciation of the letter, including what begins and ends with that letter. In this case, with the letter “D” for Dinosaur, the kids loved seeing the dinosaur roam about on the iPad.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Our kids had so much fun with the cards. And while our youngest, at 2, needed help navigating the cards and instructions, we were able to teach our 3 year old how to manage it on his own (it is recommended for ages 3 and up). He had fun picking out which letters he wanted to learn about next.

Still want to see more? We put together a short video here of how we interacted with the cards:

We’re really excited to have this great program in our home. Our kids are always wanting to play on the iPad, but we’re always careful that it is something both fun and educational for them. We’re already looking at adding to our collection! These cards would also make great quality educational gifts this holiday season – that any kid would want. So be sure to check out Cypher Kids today, you can find them online here…

{Project Home} A Rustic Christmas Wreath

Rustic Christmas Wreath by @anightowlblog - just an open wooden frame, burlap, twine, ornaments and some thumbtacks and you can put together a beautiful frame in minutes!

Hi friends! Are you still mid-Christmas decorating like I am? I hope not, because at this rate I’m going to have to leave Christmas up all of January just to enjoy the last-minute things I’m putting up! Though today I’m sharing with you a Rustic Christmas Wreath that I literally put together in minutes. I was shopping at one of my favorite stores this weekend, Hobby Lobby, and I came across these beautifully rustic ready made frames that were of course, 50% off. So I snagged one and a box of beautiful cream glass ornaments and got to work! Here’s how I put the wreath together…

What you’ll need:

  • Ready Made Frame (open wooden frame)
  • Twine
  • Thumbtacks
  • Burlap Ribbon
  • Ornaments

And the steps:

  • I cut a length of burlap ribbon to hang the frame from and used a thumbtack to tack it to the back of the open wooden frame to hold it in place.
  • I tied three lengths of twine to the ornaments.
  • I tied a knot at the other end of the twine (to keep it from fraying), then simply used three thumbtacks to tack the ornament on twine to the back of the frame so that they hung from the center of the frame.
  • And you’re done!

Do you love it? I do! It’s simple and wonderfully rustic. It’s hanging in our kitchen now and I love that the hint of Christmas it brings to the room. Now if I could just get our front door wreath done I may just finish Christmas before Christmas comes this year! What are working on this week? Finishing up your shopping or still decorating like I am?

National Pastry Day with Starbucks and Sam’s Club #DeliciousPairings

National Pastry Day with Sam's Club and Starbucks #DeliciousPairings

Hi friends! Did you know that this past Sunday, December 9th was National Pastry Day? Did you celebrate? Our family did, and why not…who wouldn’t enjoy fresh pastry and a little coffee (or hot cocoa for the kids) on the side? This weekend I stopped by our local Sam’s Club to pick up our pastries and we chose the Artisan Fresh Cinnamon Rolls and their Artisan Fresh Apple Lattice Pie! We also stopped by Sam’s Club’s fantastic assortment of coffee and picked up a bag of Starbucks Limited Edition Holiday Blend!

Starbucks Holiday Blend at Sam's Club #DeliciousPairings

Starbucks Holiday Blend at Sam's Club #DeliciousPairings

Once we got home I brewed up a pot of the Starbucks Holiday Blend. As a daily coffee drinker, I have to say that this blend is fantastic. I buy Starbucks from the shop but also buy it from the store to brew at home as well. And this blend really holds up to the Starbucks standard, and it’s absolutely what you want in your coffee pot this time of year. I added a little bit of milk and sugar to let it’s true taste come through. You can really taste flavors of the holidays: ginger, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange and cloves.

Artisan Fresh Cinnamon Rolls and Apple Lattice Pie at Sam's Club #DeliciousPairings

For our pastry party, I cut up pieces of the Artisan Fresh Cinnamon Rolls and Apple Lattice Pie to serve along side of the coffee.

National Pastry Day with Sam's Club and Starbucks #DeliciousPairings

The cinnamon rolls were large, fresh and so tasty. The apple pie was much the same: fresh and delicious. It’s so nice to have a Sam’s Club nearby with such a fantastic bakery! I think that might be my favorite section of the store!

We had fun tasting them all together for a sweet treat. The cinnamon rolls really brought out the cinnamon in the coffee. And the apple pie and coffee together were so tasty! Typically I have apple pie with ice cream, but I think I have found a new favorite combination! The Starbucks Holiday Blend and Sam’s Club Artisan Fresh Cinnamon Rolls and Apple Lattice Pies are truly #DeliciousPairings! So stop by your local Sam’s Club bakery today and pick up some Artisan Fresh pastries of your own along with Starbucks Holiday Blend and celebrate National Pastry Day any day of the year!
