Lamps.com Blogger Challenge – DIY Twine-Wrapped Lampshade

DIY Twine-Wrapped Lampshade by @anightowlblog

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing a fun DIY Lampshade that was part of the Lamps.com DIY Blogger Lampshade Challenge! Each participant in the challenge was provided a plain white drum lampshade to makeover, as creatively as possible. I chose to go with a simple, neutral and natural look as I knew that it would fit best in my office/craft room that I’m currently updating. And you too can create this look with just a few dollars and a little bit of time!

What you’ll need:

  • Plain white lampshade
  • Twine
  • Glue gun/glue (I used fabric hot glue)
  • Spray adhesive

And the steps:

  • I started the twine at the base of the lampshade just above the bottom lip and at the back seam, I glued the twine down with hot glue to start.
  • Then around the circumference of the lampshade I sprayed the spray adhesive about 6 inches at a time and wrapped the twine around.
  • Each time I met the seam I would again hot glue the twine down for extra hold.
  • I then repeated these steps until the entire lampshade was covered to the bottom of the top lip.
And you’re done! It took a couple of hours and about 225 feet of twine, but I’m in LOVE with the results! Here it is up close…

And all lit up and happy in my office…

What do you think? Do you love it as much as I do? I had so many ideas for this challenge, but I’m so happy I went with this one because I knew it would be right at home in my office. I love the natural, yet contemporary look.

Easy No-Sew Felt Racetrack

Hi friends! Are you buying or making your gifts this holiday season – or a little of both like I am? Today I’m sharing with you one of the DIY Christmas gifts I made for my boys and shared on Cherished Bliss earlier this year: an Easy No-Sew Felt Racetrack!

Now as you may know, I have two small boys, and right now cars rule their world! And ours. And I’ve seen similar ideas on Pinterest (I don’t have a specific pin or source), but a while back I purchased the supplies needed to make our own felt racetrack for the boys to play with.

What you’ll need:

  • Large piece of felt for the base
  • Several black felt squares
  • One yellow felt square
  • Glue gun
  • Fabric glue
  • Chalk

And the steps:

  • Simply mark a line down the middle of each black felt square (with chalk) and cut along those lines.
  • Line up two “road pieces” and draw a rounded corner with chalk and cut to make four pieces for the corners of the racetrack
  • Lay out all of the straight road pieces with the four rounded corners on the large piece of felt
  • Once the track is laid out the way you want it to be, glue each piece down with the hot glue gun and fabric glue
  • Cut the yellow felt square into long, skinny rectangles to create the lane dividers
  • Simply arrange and glue those pieces down as well
  • And you’re done!

It was an easy, no-sew project that I KNOW my boys will love! And best of all, I can just roll it up and stick it in the closet once they’re done. I can’t wait to give it to them on Christmas! What gifts are you looking to make this year?

DIY Mercury Glass Mason Jars

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing with you yet another mercury glass project: DIY Mercury Glass Mason Jars! I love mercury glass, I love mason jars, so this is naturally one of my favorite combinations yet! And after the DIY Mercury Glass Trees I shared with you earlier this week, this was the next project on my list to update our house for the holidays! The steps are again the same as the trees…

What you’ll need:

  • Glass Mason Jars
  • Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint
  • DecoArt Americana Zinc Acrylic Paint
  • Small Spray Bottle
  • Water

And the steps:

  • Mix 1 part water and 1 part zinc paint in a small spray bottle
  • Spray blotches of paint into the glass and let it dry a bit
  • Once somewhat dry, spray numerous light coats of the Looking Glass spray paint into the mason jars until well covered
  • And you’re done!

Once they were completely dry, I popped a couple of candles inside. And here’s how they turned out…

Eeee! I love them. Right now they’re showcased on our breakfast table, which is the table we use the most, so that I can stare at them everyday! We’re on our way…what Christmas craft projects are you working on?

{Thrifty Thursday} DIY Mercury Glass Trees

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing with you how to make your very own DIY Mercury Glass Trees – great for this year’s holiday decor! Can you believe that Christmas time is upon us? It’s time to deck those halls! And this season I’m still in love with all of the mercury glass I’m seeing in designer stores. But in order to save a few bucks, you know I like to DIY!

When I shared my DIY Mercury Glass Pumpkin project for the Fall, one of my Instagram buddies suggested I use the same effect on glass Christmas trees! So you know that I’ve been scouting my local AZ Goodwill stores since that time! And now that it’s that time of year – I found them! I found two hollow glass trees that were just perfect for this project. And with each only costing $1.99, this project is a steal! And this time I added in a little DecoArt Americana Zinc paint to the process to try to give that imperfect look of real mercury glass. I kind of love how it turned out! So here’s how you can make your very own…

What you’ll need:

  • Glass Tree
  • Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint
  • DecoArt Americana Zinc Acrylic Paint
  • Small Spray Bottle
  • Water

And the steps:

  • Mix 1 part water and 1 part zinc paint in a small spray bottle
  • Spray blotches of paint into the glass and let it dry a bit
  • Once somewhat dry, spray numerous light coats of the Looking Glass spray paint into the tree until well covered
  • And you’re done!

And here’s how they turned out…

So fun, right? I’m loving these in my house right now. I can’t wait to get all of my set up done and figure out the most perfect place to feature them! So what about you? Are you crafting your holiday decor or buying this year…or a little of both?

Hi friends! Have you seen the fabulous Birch Pillar Candles that are being sold by fabulous stores such as Pottery Barn and World Market lately? I’m in love with them. Well today I’m sharing a quick and easy tutorial on how you can make your very own Knock-Off Pottery Barn Birch Candles with LED pillars from the Dollar Tree!

To get us started, here is my inspiration from Pottery Barn:

Pottery Barn Painted Birch Candles

What you’ll need:

  • Dollar Tree LED pillar candles
  • Birch or Wood patterned scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge and application tool
  • Twine

And the steps:

  • Cut the wood patterned scrapbook paper to the heighth of the LED pillar candle
  • Apply Modge Podge to the back of the paper
  • Wrap the paper around the LED pillar candle
  • Apply a layer of Mod Podge to the outside of the seam for extra durability
  • Tie a length of twine around the candle, and you’re done!

And here is how they turned out…

Aren’t they super cute? I’m so happy with how they turned out, I’m heading back to the Dollar Tree to pick up more LEDs! And how cute would these be as a gift? I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t love to have a set. A perfect DIY for your holiday gifts or to spruce up your household this season.

DIY No-Sew Football Tee

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing with you a quick, easy and affordable tutorial to make your very own DIY No-Sew Football Tee! We are BIG football fans in my household. So needless to say we have our fair share of footballs and jerseys. But have you seen those cute football tees and onesies with laces on sites like Etsy? I know I have, and I even bought one last year, for $20+! Now I’m all for supporting handmade businesses (and do all the time!), but when I think it’s something I can make myself (and cheaper too), I like to give it a try! Enter Aleene’s glues and adhesives.

Now you all are familiar with tacky glue, right? That stuff is a crafter’s dream! But did you know that there is an entire line of Aleene’s glues and adhesives? Well I’ve had a chance to do some crafting with the items you see above, and they are all just fabulous! In particular I have to say I’m a big fan of Aleene’s Peel & Stick Tape. I’m not an expert seamstress by any means, so this tape is perfect for quick and easy fabric projects, like this DIY No-Sew Football Tee!

What you’ll need:

  • Aleene’s Peel & Stick Tape
  • Brown T-Shirt
  • White Cotton Belting or Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape/Ruler

And the steps:

  • Cut lengths of the belting or ribbon for the football laces (on this sized tee, I cut the long piece at 9″ and the shorter ones at 5″)
  • Line the back of the laces with Aleene’s Peel & Stick Tape
  • Place the long lace down first, then space out your shorter laces accordingly until you get the football laces look, and you’re done!

And here’s how the little DIY No-Sew Football Tee turned out, pretty cute right?

How easy is that? It was so easy that though I had made the first tee for my 3-yo, I made another one for my youngest, just with slightly smaller laces. Oh and I had to show you how cute he looks in it!

So have you been wanting your own football tee but have been wary of the price or thought it might be too hard to make it yourself? Then go pick up some Aleene’s Peel & Stick Tape and give it a try! I promise you won’t be disappointed! You can find Aleene’s glues and adhesives on their siteFacebookTwitter, and Pinterest too!

I wrote this post as part of a paid campaign with Aleene’s and Blueprint Social. However, the opinions in this post are my own.
