"No Fear" Potty Training with Huggies #PullUpsPottyBreaks

Hi friends! If we’re friends on Instagram, then you may know that we’ve recently undertaken potty training with our 2-year old, Alex! Now this isn’t our first rodeo. That’s right, we have a 4-year old, AJ, who, by the grace of God and of course Huggies Pull-Ups, is potty trained. Now that was an interesting experience! Our first child – and potty training. Back then I used to listen to other folks, about when we should be potty training, when he should be ready. I remember we got a few weeks into our first “go” at it with AJ, then he started having complete meltdowns. I’m talking full-on crying fits while sitting on the toilet. Needless to say we scrapped that attempt and tried again, I think like 8 months later! Thankfully that time it “stuck” and he’s been doing pretty well ever since.

So this time around, I’ve never put any pressure on Alex to potty train. I figure when he’s ready – we’re ready. Actually, because of the issues we had with AJ, I’ve probably been more hesitant to start! But recently there have been signs. I mean, the second child is totally different right? Alex sees everything that his big brother does. So I suppose it’s more natural that he would be interested in going potty in the toilet sooner. But at 2 and a half (and it’s a boy!) I had my reservations. This time, I did a little reading up before getting started – on the Huggies Pull-Ups site!

Huggies Pull-Ups has a wealth of information and tips for potty training, including a great section called “Getting Started.” Here I took a quick questionnaire: “Is your child ready for potty training.” And after checking:

  • Shows increased interest in the bathroom.
  • Asks to wear Big Kid or “grown-up” underwear

…I found out that Alex was likely ready to start potty training! So we took a quick look at the Huggies Getting Started Checklist and went shopping! First on the list, we picked up a pack of Huggies Pull-Ups – now with new designs featuring Mike & Sully from Monsters University!

"No Fear" Potty Training with Huggies #PullUpsPottyBreaks

Now I didn’t think too much of it until we got the Pull-Ups home, but the boys LOVE the Monsters U training pants! Even AJ wants to wear them! Oops! Alex was of course game to give them a try, he’s been wanting to wear Pull-Ups for a while now.

"No Fear" Potty Training with Huggies #PullUpsPottyBreaks

Awww look at my baby looking like a big boy in Huggies Pull-Ups! They grow up so fast. And now we’re off on a new adventure. All over again. But you know, I feel a little more empowered this time with Huggies Pull-Ups and their wealth of information and tips on my side. And you know what? Knowing that life doesn’t end if it doesn’t work out the first time around helps, as well. AJ turned out just fine. Each kid is different. They’re ready when they’re ready. So here we go. I hope you’ll come along on this journey with us! Wish us luck!

Pull-Ups help take the scare out of potty training by making it fun and easy with new Monsters U character training pants! You can help make potty training easier by staying consistent and using rituals like the potty break. Make it a game and ask your toddler, “What does a little monster take?”…“A Potty Break!”

And these amazing photos that I cherish and adore were taken by Stacey Woodward of Dream Photography Studio. I’ve talked about Stacey on the blog before, as she is the fab photographer who took my blog profile picture that you see in the sidebar! I was so impressed by the work that she did for the West Valley Moms Blog, I knew I had to have her take some updated photos of my boys.

She is so very natural and my boys had fun taking pictures! She’s also so very quick and efficient, we were done in no time, before the boys could even get antsy. And the turnout was amazing. Just look!

Family Portraits by Dream Photography Studio | Phoenix, AZ

I love how she captured the natural inquisitiveness of my boys. They’re always on the go, always moving…but there are so many smiles!

This picture kills me. We were trying to get Alex to put his hands in his pockets – he was more interested in his belly. It’s shots like these that are unplanned, that really seem so natural and special.

Kids Craft Ideas – Owl Painting Activity

Kids Craft Ideas - an Easy Owl Painting Activity at { anightowlblog.com } #kids #activities #owls

Hi friends – Kendall here from Songbirds & Buttons, a new Mommy Contributor at A Night Owl! Today I’m sharing a fun and easy kids craft idea – an Owl Painting Activity! In our house, we love to paint. It doesn’t even matter what it is. Just getting out our tub of multicolored goodies (paint) and being able to play around with the different brushes is a celebration all in itself for us.

What you’ll need:

  • Ceramic Animal – We got our owl from Michaels. They also had small birds, dogs, and other ceramics to paint. The owl was under $5!
  • Paint – Any kind will do – use what you have in your craft closet.
  • Paint brushes, sponges, or just your fingers – whatever works for you :)
  • A large sheet to lay down before painting. Believe me, this will be a lifesaver for you!

And the steps:

  • Paint the ceramic figure a solid color – I used a light blue paint that we had left over from a previous project.
  • Get out your paints + supplies and let your little one have fun and be creative
  • Oh, and don’t forget the most important part – when you’re done – make sure to take a nice big bubble bath to clean up!
  • Momma tip: Assist when you need to – but don’t try to do things for them. I held the owl for Wyatt to paint when he was having trouble reaching the spots that he wanted. If you try to do things for them, they will lose interest.

So what do you think? It’s so cute and special, because our little one made it. And it was a great activity for us to work on together. What kind of crafts do you like to do with your little ones?

XO,

{14 Days of Valentines} Children’s Valentine’s Day Painting

Children's Valentine's Day Painting by Songbirds & Buttons
Hi friends! My name is Kendall and I blog over at Songbirds and Buttons! Today I am sharing with you an easy and fun Valentine’s Day Painting that you can do with your little one! We are making them this year as gifts :) I love the holidays, I love decorating, but most of all I love doing craft projects with my son, Wyatt. This is the first time that we’ve done this project – but it definitely won’t be the last!

What you’ll need:

  • Canvas
  • Paint brush
  • Sponge Brush
  • 3 different paint colors
  • sharpie marker

And the steps:

  1. Use your sponge brush to paint the background of your canvas. (You can use a regular brush if you’d like – but the sponge brush is faster).
  2. Let canvas dry for an hour.
  3. Fold a piece of craft paper in half, cut out a heart, and then use washi tape to adhere the paper to your canvas. Washi tape doesn’t stick – and I try to use what I have for projects.
  4. Use your second color to paint inside of your cutout – it helps if you have a little one to do some of the muscle work :)
  5. Peel the paper cutout off of your canvas to reveal a beautiful heart!
  6. Use your third paint to let your little one have some fun! Let them put their hands in it and play around – then – when they’re ready – help them to press their hand on the canvas in the center of the heart.
  7. Write a special message – or just their name and the date so you’ll always remember.

And here’s how it turned out…

So, what do you think? Cute – right? If you end up making this project with your little one(s) – please make sure to share a photo with us!

A Winter Wardrobe from Cookie’s Kids! #CookiesKids

Sean John Hoodies from Cookie's Kids Winter Wardrobe #CookiesKids

Hi friends! Is it cold where you live right now? Well guess what, we’re in sunny Phoenix, AZ and it is freezing this week! But thankfully this year we had the opportunity to shop at Cookie’s Kids to add the latest in Winter Fashion to our kids’ wardrobes!

CookiesKids.com is a Kid’s Department Store specializing in the latest in Kids Style and Kids Fashion, and this year they’re celebrating their 40th year in business! As a little sneak peak into their history, it all started out when a young man named Cookie and his brother Marvin went into business together. They rented a 1600 square foot store in Jamaica, Queens, fixed it up, bought inventory and Summer and Fall, and opened a day after Thanksgiving with a full stock of holiday toys. The toys were a success and they put the extra money toward buying children’s clothing for the next season. When that did well, they bought more clothing. The business was on it’s way. As the brothers Cookie, Marvin and Sonny, who had come in as a third partner in the business, began to open new stores in new locations, inventory expanded. Besides the latest fashions, our customers wanted shoes, toys, backpacks and accessories and we were prepared to deliver. By the late 1990′s there were six superstores throughout the NYC area, and though they previously had different names, by that time they were all named Cookie’s Kids. Also in the late ’90s came an important addition to Cookie’s Kids’ inventory: school uniforms. It was the steady success in uniform sales that paved the way for founding CookiesKids.com in 2007, which originally sold uniforms and soon after the entire Cookie’s Kids Inventory.

Today, Cookie’s Kids sells Kids Clothes from seven stores in the NYC area in Bronx, Brooklyn and Jamaica as well as online at CookiesKids.com. And we had the chance recently to shop their online store for some clothing for our little guys! The Cookie’s Kids site is just fabulous. I love the different ways you can navigate the site: you can search by gender, size, clothing type – it really is a great user experience! You can check out my personal shopping experience in my Cookie’s Kids Google+ Album! When I was searching for the clothing that would be a great compliment to my boys’ Winter clothes, I checked out Hoodies and was drawn to these adorable Sean John “Maxed” Sweatshirts! I was shopping in the 2T-4T Boys category and I noticed that they had my boys’ sizes in two different colors and I thought that would be so fun! You know as moms we LOVE to coordinate our kids’ clothes!

Sean John Maxed Sweatshirt 2T-4T #CookiesKids

So we ordered the sweatshirts at a great price and were so happy with what we received!

Sean John Hoodies from Cookie's Kids Winter Wardrobe #CookiesKids

The quality of the clothing is amazing. And the sweatshirts look just so cute on the boys, don’t you think?

Also when I was browsing around the site a little more, I noticed that Cookie’s Kids carries Baby Phat Clothing. Now as you can see I only have boys, but if I had a girl, this line is just too cute and sassy!

They also sell so many other items, such as toys and even the trendy and quality Northface Backpack! I’m definitely heading back here when it’s time for Back to School!

Sean John Hoodies from Cookie's Kids Winter Wardrobe #CookiesKids

All in all, we were so happy with our experience at CookiesKids.com! Just look at those smiling faces! With quality selection,  fantastic prices and great shipping rates, how can you go wrong? You can check out what others are saying on the web by searching on #CookiesKids. I’m sure you’ll hear much of the same, great story! And you can also find Cookie’s Kids on Facebook and Twitter, to join their community!

Interactive Learning with Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Hi friends! Do you have little ones at home like I do? If so, I have a FUN interactive learning product to share with you today: the Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards by Cypher Entertainment! Cypher Kids introduces kids to the world of augmented reality – through 3D Learning Cards! There are three different interactive cards products currently on the market: Letters, Numbers and Animals! Since both of my kids, at ages 2 and 3, are learning their alphabet we thought that the Letters program was perfect for us! First, we ordered our Letters cards from Cypher through the Apple Store.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Once we received the cards in the mail, we promptly downloaded the Cypher Kids Club – Letters app for FREE from the iTunes app store. We chose to download and install the app onto our iPad, since that is what our kids use the most, but the Cypher Kids Club apps are available for download on the iPhone as well!

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Then once we launched the app, we were ready for some learning fun! From the main menu you choose the card that you want to interact with.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

The boys have found so many of the letters to be fun, but what boy wouldn’t choose “D” for Dinosaur first? Once you’ve picked the corresponding paper card and found it on the app, you’ll flip the card over so that the 3D marker is showing.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Then you hold your iPad over the card so that the camera can read the 3D marker and voila! The interaction begins. Digi and Beebot, the two robotic hosts of Cypher Kids take you through the pronunciation of the letter, including what begins and ends with that letter. In this case, with the letter “D” for Dinosaur, the kids loved seeing the dinosaur roam about on the iPad.

Cypher Kids Club Reality Cards #CypherKidsClub

Our kids had so much fun with the cards. And while our youngest, at 2, needed help navigating the cards and instructions, we were able to teach our 3 year old how to manage it on his own (it is recommended for ages 3 and up). He had fun picking out which letters he wanted to learn about next.

Still want to see more? We put together a short video here of how we interacted with the cards:

We’re really excited to have this great program in our home. Our kids are always wanting to play on the iPad, but we’re always careful that it is something both fun and educational for them. We’re already looking at adding to our collection! These cards would also make great quality educational gifts this holiday season – that any kid would want. So be sure to check out Cypher Kids today, you can find them online here…

Happy learning!

DIY Superhero Backdrop

Happy Halloween friends! Today I’m sharing with you a quick and easy DIY Superhero Backdrop that you can make with dollar store supplies and in just minutes! A DIY Superhero Backdrop is perfect for your superhero parties, for fun photo booth backgrounds, OR for taking pictures of your little superheros on Halloween! Which is just why I made mine!

What you’ll need:

  • Black posterboard (or whatever color you prefer)
  • Yellow or light-colored crayon
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Removable mounting squares

And the steps:

  • Simply draw the design of the “city landscape” that you want right onto the back of the posterboard with a yellow crayon (that is the color that I felt showed up the best)
  • Cut along the lines you’ve drawn
  • Mount the posterboard to the wall with removable mounting squares, and you’re done! Easy!

My kids are dressed up as Spiderman and Batman this year. My little superheros! Earlier this week I shared some of their past costumes. Isn’t it so much fun to dress them up? I’m setting them up for blackmail pictures early on! Well they both had a lot of fun playing in front of their new backdrop, you know until they were tired of mom taking pictures. You’ll be able to tell when that happened below!

Ok kiddos, I get it, you’re done! They’re just so cute. What are your little ones dressed up as this year? Could you use a quick and easy DIY Superhero Backdrop in your home?

{Birthday Bash} A Sesame Street Party

At 1 year old, one of the main things that my youngest son, Alex, identified with was Sesame Street and Elmo! So a Sesame Street themed party was a perfect fit. There were many fun aspects to this party. First up, I changed up our entryway mantel with some Sesame Street and birthday fun! I did a fairly simply and easy subway print in the party colors and made an Elmo wreath (just yarn wrapped, with 2′ white and orange cardstock circles, large black sequins for pupils)! Then I framed a portion of Alexander’s invitation as well as printed a larger version of the picture that was on his invite. One of my favorite aspects of the party were the ADORABLE Sesame Street goody buckets that the kids got to take home. I purchased the blue, red and green buckets from the dollar section of Target. I then used a 2′ circle punch to make circles for eyes, noses, and cookies. I found good-sized black sequins at Hobby Lobby that I used for pupils. Lastly I created a template from a picture online to cut out Oscar’s furry eyebrows. I simply glued those pieces in place, and voila! Sesame Street goody buckets. Party games! We had them all: Oscar’s Trash Toss, Pin the Nose on Elmo, and How Many Cookies in Cookie Monster’s Jar? And the cake! Though we had a ton of cupcakes (again, thanks to my Mom), I made a simple round “smash” cake for Alex. And who else should it be than Mr. Cookie Monster?

It was a great time and a great theme for a 1-year old’s party! I hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse.

Well it’s been months since my oldest’s 3rd birthday party. But with the help of ANO contributor Rachel, I finally got what few pictures I took of the party into collages to share with you all! I purchased a printable package from the Wants and Wishes Shop, but other than that, everything else was DIY. I created VIP passes as invitations that the kids got to wear at the party. I created a little photobooth equipped with a “Greetings from Radiator Springs” sign, mustaches and checkered flags. There were also “Mater Teeth” which are not shown, to protect the innocent. Though I have to say those were a big hit! I updated our mantel with a party printable, a picture of AJ and his name and the number 3. The cupcakes were made by my Mother and were so delicious! My Mom also scoured the Valley for Cars favors, each take home bag was packed to the brim with Cars crayons, toys, Pez, and other candy! Lastly, the racetrack was the hit of the party. Hand crafted by “Papa” (my Dad) the kids spent a majority of their time racing their new Hotwheels down the track.

Oh, and as “thank you” cards from the party, I sent out a copy of the photobooth pictures to each guest through Postagram. I thought it would be a fun souvenir from the party! It was a great time, and I hope you enjoyed the pictures!

{Project Home} A Toy Story Bedroom

Toy Story Kids Room at @anightowlblog

After months of doing a little here, a little there…we have finally finished AJ’s Toy Story bedroom! We moved into our new house about a year and a half ago, and though I had set up a nursery for AJ in our previous home, it just felt too young for our now toddler. Since he loves Toy Story, Woody, and Buzz, a Toy-Story themed room was a perfect fit.

I did some in-depth research (you know, hours of Pinterest pinning) and came across this mock-up of Andy’s room in Toy Story 3, which I used as “pinspiration”:

And here is how our Toy Story room turned out!

I painted the room a liveable shade of blue from Dunn-Edwards. The yellow vinyl stars I purchased from Amazon, though you could make your own if you have a Silhouette or Cricut. I made this Etch-A-Sketch chalkboard from a thrifted mirror (tutorial post HERE). On each side of the chalkboard are pictures of AJ with Woody and Jessie at California Adventure. That was quite an experience for him! The pictures are in inexpensive frames that I embellished with a star and cowboy boot from Hobby Lobby.
