BHG @Walmart Room Refresh Challenge

BHG Room Refresh Challenge #BHGChallenge

Hi friends! If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a few little teasers this week about our Better Homes and Gardens at Walmart Outdoor Living makeover. And TODAY is the big reveal! Now we live in sunny Arizona where it is already prime outdoor weather. So it’s time to start sprucing up our outdoor spaces! And boy did we need some help in that area! We’ve been in our house a couple of years and have really spent most of that time (and money) indoors. Now granted the boys have a nice play area, but other than that we just have a picnic table, a grill (necessity), and a couple of wrought iron lawn chairs. So when we were offered the chance to makeover an outdoor living space, we jumped at it!

Now are you ready for this amazing transformation? Here’s the Before and After…

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

Wow, right? I mean it really went from a couple of chairs to a little outdoor room. All with just a little bit of effort and money! I’ll walk you through some of the updates. First up, we have mostly rock throughout our whole yard. We’ve talked about building out our patio with pavers but just haven’t had the time or money. And then I found these Stomp Stones in the Walmart garden section. Perfect! We “paved” a little area at a similar cost to just paving materials and in no time by stomping them on top of our current rock.

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

Next we picked out some new cushions from an amazing collection of colors and patterns from the BHG Patio line. I showed you all the goodness on Instagram, and though I think most of you picked the turqouise stripes, we went with a lovely BHG Simple Stripe cushion in green, black and white.

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

Now they do have a lovely selection of accent pillows, but I fell head over heels for the BHG Black Tulip Medallion deep seat pillow. It was much too large for our chairs, so I did what any DIY/Crafter would do: I cut it in half and turned it into two! You should have seen my husband’s face when I did it, but we both love the end result!

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

Our front yard has it in droves, but our back yard is missing some serious greenery. So that is one thing we wanted to add to this space. One way we added it is with this little palm in a lovely BHG Bombay Decorative Planter.

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

With any little outdoor space like this, you have to have a table, right? And of course the thrifter in me already had the PERFECT solution. Forever ago I had picked up this little wrought iron seat from Goodwill that I bought for my kitty to lounge on in my office. Now kitty is no longer with us (sigh), and I’ve yet to find a use for it. But I simply placed a large (also Goodwill) tray on top and it’s been transformed into the perfect side table.

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

Let’s see, a few more details. I grabbed this owl from my extensive owl collection (shocking, I know). But this lovely pottery is from BHG! I’m a sucker for anything fleur de lis, so naturally this ended up in my cart.

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

And to round it all out, scrumptious succulents and fabulous reading material! I think I could have spent all day picking out succulents. I just grabbed a few for our side table but I have big plans to get more. They really are the perfect, no-fuss plant for sunny Arizona. And they are just darling, don’t you think?

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

Well that is the full tour. And here it is all wrapped up with a little bow.

BHG Room Refresh Challenge at { anightowlblog.com } #BHGChallenge

What do you think? Again, I’m ecstatic. And the hubs LOVES it too – that is the ultimate litmus test in my world. Now we have a space to sit and relax while the boys are outside playing on their playground and driving their little cars around. And moreover, a space that we WANT to spend time in. I can’t believe how just a little money and quality products can transform a space! Now think what you could do with $1,000, if this transformation took just a fraction of that amount? Then imagine your own room makeover and enter the BHG @Walmart Pin to Win Room Refresh Sweepstakes!

{Project Home} Joy to the World DIY Wall Hanging

Joy to the World DIY Wall Hanging @anightowlblog

Hi friends! So if you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen these letters on my messy craft table a couple of weeks ago. Well now you finally get to see what I’ve done with them – I made them into a Joy to the World DIY Wall Hanging! This DIY is so very easy, here are the steps…

What you’ll need:

  • Large “JOY” letters
  • Vintage map scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge
  • Hot glue gun/glue
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Twine

And the steps:

  • I traced the “JOY” letters onto the map scrapbook paper and cut the letters out.
  • I used Mod Podge to apply the scrapbook paper to the front of the letters.
  • Once dry, I glued the letters to a length of burlap ribbon, and glued a burlap bow to the top.
  • Lastly, I glued a loop of twine to the top of the burlap ribbon, behind the bow, to hang by, and you’re done!

What do you think? I love how it turned out. We have it hanging by our front entrance, just before the stairs. It’s a fun area to decorate with wall hangings such as this, though this is the first time I’ve made one! And, we’re almost done! Can you believe it – Christmas in less than a week?

{Project Home} A Rustic Christmas Wreath

Rustic Christmas Wreath by @anightowlblog - just an open wooden frame, burlap, twine, ornaments and some thumbtacks and you can put together a beautiful frame in minutes!

Hi friends! Are you still mid-Christmas decorating like I am? I hope not, because at this rate I’m going to have to leave Christmas up all of January just to enjoy the last-minute things I’m putting up! Though today I’m sharing with you a Rustic Christmas Wreath that I literally put together in minutes. I was shopping at one of my favorite stores this weekend, Hobby Lobby, and I came across these beautifully rustic ready made frames that were of course, 50% off. So I snagged one and a box of beautiful cream glass ornaments and got to work! Here’s how I put the wreath together…

What you’ll need:

  • Ready Made Frame (open wooden frame)
  • Twine
  • Thumbtacks
  • Burlap Ribbon
  • Ornaments

And the steps:

  • I cut a length of burlap ribbon to hang the frame from and used a thumbtack to tack it to the back of the open wooden frame to hold it in place.
  • I tied three lengths of twine to the ornaments.
  • I tied a knot at the other end of the twine (to keep it from fraying), then simply used three thumbtacks to tack the ornament on twine to the back of the frame so that they hung from the center of the frame.
  • And you’re done!

Do you love it? I do! It’s simple and wonderfully rustic. It’s hanging in our kitchen now and I love that the hint of Christmas it brings to the room. Now if I could just get our front door wreath done I may just finish Christmas before Christmas comes this year! What are working on this week? Finishing up your shopping or still decorating like I am?

{Project Home} A Ladder Christmas Card Display

Display your Christmas cards on a ladder with twine and clothespins!

Hi friends! It’s that time of year – time for holiday cards in the mail – and today I’m sharing with you how we’re displaying our this year: a Ladder Christmas Card Display! Ever since Jen of Tatertots & Jello shared her Christmas Ladder How-to last year, I’ve been on the hunt for a ladder. You see, I’m not quite at the powertools stage (that may be on my list of goals for 2013), so I wanted to find one to purchase and possibly makeover.

Then this Summer, I found this little pink beauty hanging out in the clearance section of Hobby Lobby! I had seen them in the store for weeks, but at $40, I wasn’t about to do it. But on clearance for $10? Absolutely! So it’s been hanging out in our garage until just last week!

Display your Christmas cards on a ladder with twine and clothespins!

So I grabbed a bottle of my favorite paint: Annie Sloan Chalk Paint! I got Pure White to match the moldings in our house.

Display your Christmas cards on a ladder with twine and clothespins!

After a couple coats and a layer of clear wax, the ladder went from pretty in pink to perfectly white! I wrapped some twine around the rungs…

Added a couple of clothespins, and voila! A fun, ladder Christmas card display!

Now it’s ready to be filled up! I’m just getting my cards out this week, so hopefully we’ll also get some new cards in the mail too! And now this little nook in our family room has the perfect addition. And we can see our cards this year as we’re spending time together in the family room. Love it! Thanks to Jen for the continual inspiration – we’re so happy with how it turned out! How are you displaying your Christmas cards this year?

{Project Home} Joy to the World Christmas Wreath

Joy to the World Wreath by @anightowlblog

Hi friends! I’m finally getting around to all of my Christmas decor projects this year – and first up is our Joy to the World Christmas Wreath! I mentioned in our Joy to the World Free Printable post that I’m really loving that theme this year along with very natural textures, colors and elements. And that was the inspiration for this wreath as well!

What you’ll need:

  • Grapevine wreath
  • “J” and “Y” wooden letters
  • Small globe
  • Twine
  • Burlap ribbon
  • Removable mounting squares
  • Hot glue

And the steps:

  • I tried to glue the letters straight to the wreath, but when that wasn’t working I decided to glue lengths of twine to the letters and tie them on
  • Then I simply placed the globe in the wreath where I wanted it, using removable mounting squares because I want to be able to reuse the globe
  • Then I simply tied a bulap bow and also attached that to the top by tying twine to the bow and to the wreath

Well today I’m sharing a quick and easy tutorial on how you can make your very own Knock-Off Pottery Barn Birch Candles with LED pillars from the Dollar Tree!

To get us started, here is my inspiration from Pottery Barn:

Pottery Barn Painted Birch Candles

{Project Home} A Halloween Mantel

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing with you our updated faux mantel for Halloween. This mantel is equipped with a spooky candelabra,  spiders and webs! It also includes the DIY Halloween Chalkboard Signs I shared with you just a couple of weeks ago!

Now as I said, I’ve had the signs completed for a couple of weeks now, but I needed something for the top shelf of our faux mantel. I found this perfectly spooky candelabra at Ross for just $9.99 that I knew would finish off the spooky Victorian vibe I was going for. I wanted some tall candles for the candelabra that weren’t too heavy, but couldn’t find what I was looking for. So I made some of my own! I just grabbed a set of styrofoam rods from Hobby Lobby that were the perfect size! I cut them down to the length that I wanted and covered them with Mod Podge and tissue paper to give them a smoother finish. I then poked a hole at the top and cut small lengths of white rope to use as wicks. I think they turned out perfect!

And here is the finished product…

What do you think? Have you finished decorating for Halloween?

{Project Home} Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Pumpkins

I love all of the dollar store pumpkin makeovers I’ve been seeing across blogland! And today I have another one to add to the line-up: Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Pumpkins! Have you heard of Annie Sloan? I’ve been wanting to use her chalk paint on many different projects for some time now, and I finally made a couple of trips to Green Table Gifts (thanks to the tip Liz from Blue Eyed Owl) to pick up the paint and the sought after clear wax. Now I do have some furniture projects in mind, but I thought it would be fun to get a little practice in with these pumpkins. And honestly, the pumpkins look 150% better white, where I have them up in the house! And here’s how they turned out.

What do you think? I can’t wait to use this paint on so many more projects. You’ve been warned!

{Project Home} DIY Dollar Store Fall Garland

In the next installment of the great Fall update, I grabbed a bag of Fall leaves from my local Dollar Tree and decided to make a quick and easy Fall garland! I simply lined up the leaves, red and green alternating, used a small piece of tape to hold them together for the time being, and sewed a simple stitch through the center. The project took me less than 30 minutes and I was happy with the result!

It’s starting to look like Fall around here! You know, until all Halloween starts breaking out. And yes, that’s right around the corner.

I was inspired by Cost Plus World Market to update our dining room with a warm, Sante Fe styled tablescape for a small dinner party. Have you ever shopped World Market? I’ve been shopping there for years, it’s hands down the best store around to find unique and worldly wares for your home. Here’s a small tour of my World Market…

I could spend hours in this store. This time I picked up some new Nantucket and bamboo plates, some gorgeous linen napkins, a lovely wooden plate stand, a lovely Santa Fe colored pitcher, some lovely hand-crafted paper, fun yellow ikat cork placemats, rattan napkin rings…and the cutest little owl. It wouldn’t be “A Night Owl” without adding an owl, right?

{Project Home} An Instagram Mantel

Well, it’s about time that I updated my mantel. If I’m completely honest with you, I still had the decor from the 4th of July still up. Until this weekend. Until I was finally inspired to update it when I received a beautiful print from the ladies behind Well Said. You can check out this lovely “Life is” print on Etsy and stay tuned for information as to how you can win your own 8×10 print from Well Said!

So I paired the “Life is” print with my fun Holga camera on two little boxes I picked up from Hobby Lobby. Then on the second shelf I took added a topiary upcycle and twine “S” from my Easter Mantel, and a frame that I picked up a few months ago from Goodwill. I simply added two rows of twine and used small clothespins to hang a few of my favorite Instagram pictures!

So how do you think it turned out? I really enjoy it, first that my mantel is updated, but also that it’s something that is versatile. I can see updating the pictures here and there to keep it fresh. And it all started with inspiration from a Well Said print.

{Project Home} Bandanna Bunting Window Treatment

It’s been a little while since I posted my toddler boy’s Toy Story Room reveal, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go take a look HERE!

As I mentioned in that post, I made a few things for his room that I would share a tutorial for. Here is the tutorial for the Etch-A-Sketch Chalkboard.

And finally, here is a tutorial for the DIY bandanna bunting window treatment!
1. I made a pennant template from a cardboard box, folded each bandanna in half,
and traced around the template
2. I cut each pennant out, leaving the folded side in tact
3. This resulted in pennants of similar size, double-sided
4. I sewed along each of the edges, leaving the edges unfinished
5. I glued the top of each pennant to a yard of rope
6. And voila! Bandanna bunting complete!
And here’s how it looks hung in his room (I just used two brass hooks that screw into the drywall to tie the ends of the rope around):
And there you have it! My son has enjoyed his room. I still love when both of them point out the different characters in the room. All the work was certainly worth it!

{Thrifty Thursday} A Chalkboard Serving Tray

Hi friends! Welcome to another installation of Thrifty Thursday! Once again I’ll be sharing with you a thrifty find that I have upcycled into something fun, and today it’s a chalkboard serving tray. I picked up this cute little silver tray from my local Goodwill a couple of months ago. It had quite a bit of wear, but at just $2, I couldn’t pass it up! I had bigger things in mind for it…

So today I finally got around to fixing her up! I cleaned the tray, used frog tape to tape off the inset of the tray, then taped newspapers to the outside to protect the edges.

Then just a couple coats of chalkboard spray paint and voila! A perfectly cute little chalkboard tray that looks adorable in our kitchen!

Now since I just painted the tray this afternoon, I still need to give it 24 hours to dry before using chalk on it. However, I can see something like a menu or cute saying in its future…

What do you think?

{Project Home} An Easter Wreath

Remember this St. Patrick’s Day Wreath I made a few weeks ago?
Well…being as resourceful as I am (ok, you may call it lazy), I fashioned my tulle St. Patrick’s day shamrocks with twine that I tied around the tulle wreath so that I could simply untie it come Easter time and add a more Easter-y themed banner. And that’s exactly what I’ve done! I used my handy dandy Silhouette Cameo and cut out some cute Easter eggs, glued them to some twine, added a new ribbon (that I got on clearance from Hobby Lobby for $1 I might add!), and voila! A perfectly Spring-y and adorable tulle Easter wreath (inspired by my friend Erin and this pin). What do you think?
PS – if you’re looking for the tutorial of how I made the tulle wreath in the first place, simply go to this LINK and you’ll see it step by step!
Happy Easter!

{Project Home} A St. Patrick’s Day Mantel

Another holiday approaching means it’s time to update the Sneed home “mantel”, or the shelves we hung at our entryway just this Christmas so that we have a fun way to decorate for the season. And this season is St. Patrick’s Day!

My goal with these shelves is to only ever spend a few dollars per update. This time around, I put my “Thrifty Thursday” skills to work.

The beautiful “S” monogramed frame we received from my parents at Christmas. I was actually glad that I hadn’t found the perfect place for it in our house yet, because I’m loving it right here. It just might stay. It came with just clear glass, but I found this lovely green scrapbook paper behind it that I felt gave it a little St. Patty’s flair. I paired it with a small reed ball that I picked up from a Goodwill trip.

On the bottom shelf, the candlestick, brown frame, and wooden box were all purchased at Goodwill. The shamrock and banner cutout were leftovers from the St. Patty’s Day bannerthat I made for a friend.

The Irish Blessing PrintableI made a couple of weeks ago after coming across it when researching fun ideas for St. Patty’s Day. I really like the message. The cork board I had bought from the Target dollar area a few months ago. And lastly the light green candle and springy flowers are from the dollar store.

I enjoy the way it all turned out! What do you think? Now to start planning for Easter! Never a dull moment…

{Project Home} A St. Patrick’s Day Banner

Well it appears we are continuing on with the St. Patrick’s theme…this time with a banner! A few days ago a good friend of mine, Erin, texted me a picture of her adorable St. Patty’s day themed mantel, but asked if I could make a banner that would help finish it off. But of course! So I went to work…

I kept it pretty simple. I cut out banner forms from brown-paper-bag colored cardstock, with two holes at the top of each to thread twine through. I once again used shamrock forms I had picked up from the dollar store, but you could easily cut shamrock shapes out, and glued on top. Erin suggested she was thinking of “Kiss Me I’m Irish” for the banner, so I cut out the letters for the phrase, and glued each on top of the shamrocks. Quick and easy! But I think it turned out so cute…and here it is displayed in her lovely home!

Perfect! Stay tuned for our St. Patty’s Day Mantel reveal…

St. Patrick’s Day Tulle Wreath

A friend of mine, Erin, made an adorable tulle wreath for Valentine’s day, so I thought I would give it a try for St. Patrick’s Day and love the way it turned out!

I covered a straw wreath with green ribbon. Then cut hunter green and lime green tulle into 17 inch strips. I tied the strips of tulle around the wreath, alternating 3 hunter green strips and 1 lime green strip, all the way around the wreath until covered. I then cut out the letters”LUCK” and glued them to shamrocks, which you could also cut out (I happened to buy a package of pre-cut glitter shamrocks). I then glued the shamrocks to twine and tied the letters to the wreath. I glued green ribbon to the wreath and hung on the door.

I love the way that it turned out! It’s fluffy (as my husband calls it) and FUN!

{Project Home} An Etch-A-Sketch Chalkboard

Thanks to all who have visited and commented on AJ’s (my two-year-old) new Toy Story themed bedroom. If you haven’t seen it yet, go take a look HERE!

As I mentioned in that post, I made a few things for his room that I would share a tutorial for. Up first: the Etch-A-Sketch chalkboard!

When I was doing research for the room (you know, hours on Pinterest), my friend Rebecca from The Crafted Sparrow, came across this idea and shared with me:

{source }

It is from a Toy Story themed birthday party, but instantly I knew that I wanted to figure out a fun way to use the Etch-A-Sketch in his room. Once I decided that a chalkboard was the way to go, I started patrolling Goodwill for a cheap frame or mirror. And I found one!

Once I found the mirror I wanted to use, I taped off the outside wood frame and spray painted two coats of chalkboard paint directly onto the mirror (yes, it works!). I let that dry, then taped off the inside of the frame to spray paint the outside red…many, many coats of red. In hindsight, I would probably use a primer since it took so many coats to get an even color, but it all worked out.

Once the red paint was dry, I printed out the Etch-A-Sketch logo, layered a piece of newspaper underneath it, and traced it onto the frame where I wanted the logo to go. By doing this, the newspaper leaves a faint outline on the frame (a trick I learned from Pinterest!). I then filled in the traced logo with a gold paint marker.

For the knobs, I purchased a set of four round wooden circles from Hobby Lobby, glued two of those together for each knob and painted them white with acrylic paint. Once those were dry and ready to go, I simply glued them in place on the frame…to bring me to the final product:

I love how it turned out! It’s one of my most favorite, and most unique, elements of the room. I hope you enjoy!

{Project Home} Simply Valentine

Since everyone seems to still be on the Valentine’s Day bandwagon (and who wouldn’t be? all the pink, red and hearts are fabulous!), I figured I’d share our simple and inexpensive Valentines wreath this year.

While thrifting with my Mother a couple of weekends ago, I purchased this reed wooden wreath for only $1.50! Using some red gloss spray paint I had on hand, I gave the wreath a couple of coats, and voila! A perfectly cute new wreath for our front door. I thought about adding something to it, but I love simple…so I left it as is. Right now I have it hanging by some red ribbon; however, I’m thinking about changing it out for some lovely burlap, what do you think?

What wreaths have you made for Valentines this year? I’ve seen some great ones out there made by my friends, in blogland, and on Pinterest. So fun! What a great holiday.
