{The Food Files} A Sugar-Free Shamrock Shake

Have you seen them? The ads for McDonalds Shamrock Shakes. I die. No literally, it’s one of my favorite items they make. My dilemma? Well, not only should I not eat a shake a day, I actually also shy away from processed sugar and eat fairly low carb. My solution? I try my best to find ways to make things that I love in a low-carb or sugar free option. And here’s what I came up with and thought that I’d share with you, you know, in case you have a hankering for a shamrock shake these days too!

Ingredients
1 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 cup low-fat milk (or water if you prefer)
3 cups ice cubes (or to desired thickness)
5-6 packets of Stevia (or your preferred sweetner to taste)
1/4 tsp peppermint extract (or to taste, it’s strong)
1/4 tsp green food coloring
Whipped cream (opt)

Directions
Makes 2 servings.
Combine all ingredients and blend until smooth.
Top with real whipped cream (which is low in sugar, optional).

Variations
Protein Packed – add a scoop of protein powder for some added nutrients (may no longer be sugar-free based on the type you add)
Vanilla Dream – add a tablespoon of sugar-free vanilla instant pudding mix
Mint Chocolate Chip – add a tablespoon of diet hot chocolate mix (my favorite!)

Hope you enjoy!

{Project Home} A St. Patrick’s Day Mantel

Another holiday approaching means it’s time to update the Sneed home “mantel”, or the shelves we hung at our entryway just this Christmas so that we have a fun way to decorate for the season. And this season is St. Patrick’s Day!

My goal with these shelves is to only ever spend a few dollars per update. This time around, I put my “Thrifty Thursday” skills to work.

The beautiful “S” monogramed frame we received from my parents at Christmas. I was actually glad that I hadn’t found the perfect place for it in our house yet, because I’m loving it right here. It just might stay. It came with just clear glass, but I found this lovely green scrapbook paper behind it that I felt gave it a little St. Patty’s flair. I paired it with a small reed ball that I picked up from a Goodwill trip.

On the bottom shelf, the candlestick, brown frame, and wooden box were all purchased at Goodwill. The shamrock and banner cutout were leftovers from the St. Patty’s Day bannerthat I made for a friend.

The Irish Blessing PrintableI made a couple of weeks ago after coming across it when researching fun ideas for St. Patty’s Day. I really like the message. The cork board I had bought from the Target dollar area a few months ago. And lastly the light green candle and springy flowers are from the dollar store.

I enjoy the way it all turned out! What do you think? Now to start planning for Easter! Never a dull moment…

{Project Home} A St. Patrick’s Day Banner

Well it appears we are continuing on with the St. Patrick’s theme…this time with a banner! A few days ago a good friend of mine, Erin, texted me a picture of her adorable St. Patty’s day themed mantel, but asked if I could make a banner that would help finish it off. But of course! So I went to work…

I kept it pretty simple. I cut out banner forms from brown-paper-bag colored cardstock, with two holes at the top of each to thread twine through. I once again used shamrock forms I had picked up from the dollar store, but you could easily cut shamrock shapes out, and glued on top. Erin suggested she was thinking of “Kiss Me I’m Irish” for the banner, so I cut out the letters for the phrase, and glued each on top of the shamrocks. Quick and easy! But I think it turned out so cute…and here it is displayed in her lovely home!

Perfect! Stay tuned for our St. Patty’s Day Mantel reveal…

St. Patrick’s Day Tulle Wreath

A friend of mine, Erin, made an adorable tulle wreath for Valentine’s day, so I thought I would give it a try for St. Patrick’s Day and love the way it turned out!

I covered a straw wreath with green ribbon. Then cut hunter green and lime green tulle into 17 inch strips. I tied the strips of tulle around the wreath, alternating 3 hunter green strips and 1 lime green strip, all the way around the wreath until covered. I then cut out the letters”LUCK” and glued them to shamrocks, which you could also cut out (I happened to buy a package of pre-cut glitter shamrocks). I then glued the shamrocks to twine and tied the letters to the wreath. I glued green ribbon to the wreath and hung on the door.

I love the way that it turned out! It’s fluffy (as my husband calls it) and FUN!

So I’ve started work on de-Valentines-ing our house, and now it’s time to move on to the next fun holiday, which for us is St. Patrick’s Day!
