{Trim Your Tree} DIY Vintage Button Ornament

DIY Vintage Button Ornament at @anightowlblog #trimyourtree

Hi friends! I’m Kendall from Songbirds & Buttons, friends and VA for Kimberly here at A Night Owl, and today I’m sharing with you a DIY Vintage Button Ornament to finish out the Trim Your Tree series! A few years ago I came across a bag full of vintage buttons at a thrift store. I’ve been using them for odd projects here and there – I just think they are so beautiful. I wanted to use them to make a keepsake of some sort, and with Christmas just around the corner – I couldn’t think of a better reason.

What you’ll need:

  • Buttons
  • Baker’s Twine
  • A little bit of time!

And the steps:

  • It’s so simple! Just string the buttons onto your bakers twine and when you have a decent number of buttons on (I used around 40) just tie the twine to create the circle.
  • After the ornament was completed I added on a small bow using the bakers twine – a small little detail that makes a huge difference!

DIY Kids Chalkboard Ornaments at @anighowlblog

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing an easy but fun DIY Kids Chalkboard Ornament with you as part of our Trim Your Tree series this week as well as participating in the 12 Days of Christmas Crafts some other fabulous bloggers! Be sure you check out Kristi’s DIY Snow Globes at I Should Be Mopping the Floor and check Mama Marchand’s Nest tomorrow for another great Kids DIY! But first, for this project, here are the directions…

What you’ll need:

  • Plastic ornament bulb (somewhat flat is easiest to color on)
  • Chalkboard paint/paintbrush
  • Colored chalk/chalk pen
  • Baker’s Twine

And the steps:

  • Simply paint the plastic bulb with chalkboard paint, waiting an hour between coats, until well covered
  • Wait 24 hours for paint to cure, then prime the bulb with chalk
  • I wrote my kids’ names with a chalk pen on the bulbs before giving to them, I had to go over them a bit after they were done coloring

  • I then gave the bulbs to the kids for coloring! They had so much fun…
  • Once they had their fill, I simply tied a loop of baker’s twine to the top and hung our little masterpieces!

{Trim Your Tree} DIY Snowflake Ornament

DIY Toilet Paper Roll Glitter Snowflake Ornament at @anightowlblog

Hi friends! Have you all seen the pins going around on Pinterest of the wall art made out of toilet paper tubes? I thought is was a pretty nifty idea… so when Kimberly asked me if I wanted to share a DIY ornament, the idea the idea popped into my head to make it using toilet paper tubes! Being that practically everyone uses toilet paper this craft is super inexpensive. If you have a glitter and ribbon stash like I do, this craft is free! Also, if you have little ones that like to craft this is a fun and inexpensive one for them to make for teachers, grandparents, and friends. I could also see adding these to wrapped presents instead of a bow.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 toilet paper roll tubes
  • Scissors
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • 2 paper plates
  • Ribbon to hang
  • Paint (optional)

And the steps:

  • Cut toilet paper tubes into about 3/4in sections
  • Arrange pieces into the shape you want and glue
  • Add glue to the edges (be careful it doesn’t drip)
  • Cover glue in glitter
  • Let dry, than add a ribbon and hang

{Trim Your Tree} DecoArt Snow-Capped Ornament + Giveaway!

DecoArt DIY Snow Capped Ornament by @anightowlblog

Hi friends! Thanks for joining us on our next installment of the Trim Your Tree series, and today is sponsored by our good friends over at DecoArt! DecoArt is currently celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas Crafting Fun! And we’re celebrating right along with them by creating our own DecoArt ornament!

DecoArt 12 Days of Christmas Crafting Fun!

I just LOVE DecoArt products, you can add pizzazz to any of your projects, like this Baker’s Gift Basket I shared with you recently. Their paints and craft products are also a great way to update plain ornaments to make them pop or to add special sentiment. And today I’m sharing with you the DecoArt products and steps I used to make this adorable DIY Snow Capped Ornament!

What you’ll need:

And the steps:

  • First I drew a “snow-melt” line on the bulb with the DecoArt Snow Writer. This gives a clean line for the “snow” to end on the bulb.
  • Once the Snow Writer line was dry, I then filled in the upper portion of the bulb with DecoArt Glistening Snow-Tex. This stuff is FUN! I layered it on thick, and while the first steps are fairly quick, you’re going to want to let the Snow-Tex dry for 24 hours before handling.
  • Once the Snow-Tex was dry, I simply tied some baker’s twine to the top and hung on the tree!
